What is Deca (nandrolone)?
‘Deca’ as it is known, is probably the second most popular and widely used injectable anabolic steroid behind testosterone and perhaps ranks third when orals are included in this (testosterone and Dianabol are the most popular). As with other steroid developed several decades ago, it was intended to treat those with wasting diseases and it was particularly effective at halting catabolism and promoting anabolism – hence why bodybuilders and athletes started using it as it would greatly enhance their performance and physique. But what exactly is Deca Durabolin?
In short, this compound, developed by Organon pharmaceuticals in the 1960’s, is nandrolone with the addition of a decanoate ester. Looking at its structure it is clear to see the lack of carbon atom at the 19th position, meaning it is classed as ’19-nor’ (19-nortestosterone) steroid. Despite this minor change to its makeup, in reality it acts in a very different way to testosterone itself. For starter its anabolic rating (125) is greater than that of test, but its androgenic rating (37) is much lower (it is reduced, via the 5-alpha reductase enzyme to DHN rather than DHT, which is far less potent of an androgen); in addition, it only converts to estrogen at approximately 20-25% the rate that testosterone does. On the face of it, it looks a very solid profile: highly anabolic, not particularly androgenic nor estrogenic, however, there is always a downside, and this is no different with Deca – it has a very potent progestinic nature, meaning progestin based sides will be prevalent. I will detail the negative side effects further on in this article, but for now I shall list the positive effects of this compound.
What are the side effects associated with taking it?
One thing that users must be aware of are the side effects of Deca. Despite not being very estrogenic, this does not mean estrogen-related side won’t manifest themselves. The usual suspects here are: water retention (not always a bad thing when increases in strength are desired), higher blood pressure and gynecomastia (bitch tits). These can be usually be easily controlled with SERMS, such a nolvadex, or an AI such as Arimidex. The progestinic sides caused by Deca, however, are not easily dealt with, as the aforementioned drugs will do very little for them. Medication such as dostinex will treat prolactin side effects. Perhaps the greatest side effect in this respect, is the degree of shut down that will be caused, as progestins cause extremely hard shut down, which can sometimes take a very, very long time to recover properly from, if at all.
The androgenic side effects are as you would expect: hair loss if prone to MPB, increased body hair growth and acne, however, due to its low androgenic rating these may not be prevalent as with other stronger anabolics. It is vital to note that the use of a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (drugs used to block the formation of DHT) will actually increase Deca’s androgenic potency, so if you are taking such medication for hair loss then stop taking it whilst using this compound. Other androgenic sides includes decreased good cholesterol (HDL) and increased bad cholesterol (LDL), and perhaps most significantly the damage that can be done to your blood vessels – Deca is 11 times stronger when it comes to damaging your blood vessels than testosterone, which is not a good thing (hence why I have never used Deca and never will). Women may suffer from virilization.
Due to its long-acting nature, it may take a long time to fully recover your HPTA after you have finished your cycle, and several PCT’s over many months may be required to do so. Remember, it can take up to 18 months for Deca to leave your system, so it could be a long road to full recovery.
What benefits can be expected?
Like most steroids, Deca durabolin will provide many benefits, including: increase nitrogen retention, red blood cell count, protein synthesis and IGF-1 levels. It is particularly effective at increasing the former, so much so that it is safe to say it is one of the best steroids for doing this. On the flip side of the coin, it also has restorative effects, which most anabolics don’t. It can enhance both collagen synthesis and bone mineral content quite dramatically, so those with joint or bone problems may benefit from using this compound. Remember, it was originally created to help those with wasting diseases, HIV, anaemia, burns victims, osteoporosis sufferers and even those with pituitary conditions, so its therapeutic applications are well documented. It has even been suggested that it could be used as an anti-aging medication!
As this is a site dedicated to providing information about steroids primarily for bodybuilders and those looking at enhancing their performance, it would be wise to go into further detail about Deca Durabolin’s potential in this respect. It is, of course, a bulking steroid, and a very effective one at that. Although users will not see rapid mass gains (due to the long ester attached to the active compound), it will certainly add a lot of bulk over the course of a 10 week cycle. As you would expect, not all of the gains will be lean body mass, as Deca is quite a ‘watery’ steroid, but when you couple its anabolic nature (increased nitrogen retention, protein synthesis and IGF-1 levels) with it’s effects on joints (which will no doubt make lifting heavy easier), then it easy to see why a significant amount of LBM could be built during a longer cycle. Combined with any form of testosterone and perhaps even an oral kickstart, the gains would be immense from start to finish.
Is a Deca and testosterone cycle the best?
Combining Deca and testosterone is one of the oldest steroid cycles and goes back many, many decades. For years it was a the ‘bread and butter’ of amateurs and professionals alike and it is easy to see why. Firstly, they are both exceptional mass building steroids on their own, so when you combine the two you get even more bang for your buck. They complement each other very well, with testosterone being more androgenic (yet still of course very anabolic) and deca being more anabolic, plus it has the benefit of being very good at helping with joint pain, which is something which those who do heavy lifting may well suffer from.
The question of whether it is ‘the best’ is a difficult one to answer as it is a very subjection question and many different people with have many different opinions on the subject. Although I cannot categorically state that a deca and test cycle is the best, I can say with 100% certainty that is extremely popular, well-liked and still used to this day – and I doubt that will ever change. Both are potent, relatively low on side effects (if used correctly) and aren’t expensive at all.
Where can I find it for sale?
Sourcing Deca Durabolin isn’t too difficult, as many underground labs produce it and offer it at a good price. Pharma grade is less easy to find as there are a lot of fakes in the current market, so ensure that you trust your source 100% before purchasing pharma grade steroids.
How much Deca should I take?
As for cycling and dosing, anywhere from 200mg per week upwards is recommended, which the upper levels being 800mg. It is important to stack with testosterone as not only will this enhance the muscle building and strength increasing effects, it will also help to stop you experiencing ‘deca dick’ (where you can’t achieve an erection and/or keep it up long enough), which no man wants! To further increase the anabolic potency, an oral can be added in for the first four weeks (Dianabol or Anadrol).
